EL PAÍS English Edition EL PAÍS

Dear readers,

It has been a dramatic year in Spain: one dominated by the crisis in Catalonia, the terrorist attacks in Catalonia in August, and a surge of anti-tourism sentiment in the summer.

At the same time, there were plenty of other stories making headlines in Spain, including the continued fallout from Brexit, a closely-watched rape trial in Pamplona and Spain's ongoing war against the drug trade.

But it wasn't all doom and gloom. Among our most popular articles were a look at the unwritten rules of life in a Spanish village, the fascinating tale of an island that is Spanish for six months a year, and a piece on the Madrid visit of the viral philosopher Slavoj Žižek.

For a full wrap on the year just gone, see our piece on our most-read stories below.

For now though, thanks for reading the EL PAÍS English Edition in 2017 – we hope you continue to enjoy our coverage of all things Spanish in the coming year.

And last but not least we wish you a happy, safe and prosperous 2018.
