Dear readers,

Debate is raging about freedom of expression in Spain after an artwork describing Catalan independence leaders as "political prisoners" was pulled from a major art exhibition in Madrid. This came just a day after Spanish rapper Voltonyc lost his appeal in the Supreme Court over his prison sentence for insulting the Crown.

Elsewhere, one of our most-read stories of the week was news that 3,000 people are directly employed by drug traffickers in La Línea de la Concepción, a town of just 63,279 people and the gateway for hashish to arrive in Europe.

And from Latin America, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has launched a new digital currency dubbed the "Petro" in the hopes of easing the country's economic woes.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition, thanks for reading.
