Dear readers,

Several of our stories this week threw up some interesting questions. The Madrid neighborhood of Embajadores was named coolest in the world by Time Out – something you might expect residents to be pleased about. But with gentrification, rising rents and social issues in areas such as Lavapiés, some called the honor into question.

And it turns out the same is true of Spanish cities that have been granted World Heritage Status by UNESCO. Fifteen such cities in Spain complain of the downsides of the distinction, pointing out that they have seen their municipal coffers shrink, and are unable to carry out works to improve their citizens' lives, given the hoops they have to jump through to make any changes.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition. Thanks for reading.
