Dear readers,

All eyes were on Catalonia this week as public sector workers held a series of strikes across the region to protest budget cuts.

In Barcelona, the death of a 90-year-old woman who was hit by an electric scooter has raised renewed concerns about the proliferation of alternative mobility devices in cities across Spain.

And in Madrid, Mayor Manuela Carmena has introduced a ground-breaking raft of measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the city center. The initiative has made 472 hectares of the city center off-limits to traffic, except for local residents and public transportation.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition. Thanks for reading.
