Dear readers,

The row over who is responsible for paying the AJD mortgage tax dominated the headlines this week after the Supreme Court reversed a ruling made in October and said that the clients not the banks have to pay the controversial levy. In response, the Spanish government approved legal changes to ensure that "Spaniards will never again pay this tax."

A 63-year-old Franco supporter in Barcelona has been arrested for plotting to shoot the Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez. Police found an arsenal of weapons when they entered his house including a military assault weapon and 16 handguns. The accused allegedly wanted to kill the PM over his plans to exhume the dictator`s body from the Valley of the Fallen.

In other news, one of our most popular stories this week has been about why, according the British newspaper 'The Times', do Spanish people live so long if they smoke and drink.

We hope you enjoy this selection of articles from the EL PAÍS English Edition. Thanks for reading.
